Big John's Barbecue in Bonifay, Florida, offers a genuine taste of Southern comfort with a blend of hearty barbecue and exceptional donuts. This restaurant stands out not just for its flavorful smoked meats but also for its surprising and delightful pastry offerings, creating a unique dining experience that bridges savory and sweet perfectly.

The main attraction here is undeniably the barbecue. Whether you settle on their pulled pork sandwich, beef tips and rice, or the classic BBQ by the pound, you’ll find each dish cooked with care and an authentic smoky depth. The buns—soft and buttery—serve as the perfect vessel for tender, saucy meat that carries subtle hints of smoke and sweetness. Accompanying sides like baked beans infused with apple and bacon provide a fresh twist on traditional flavors, complemented by other Southern staples such as macaroni and cheese and coleslaw.

However, Big John’s shines equally bright when it comes to donuts. Their sprinkled and chocolate varieties are more than just a casual afterthought; these treats are a crowd favorite, frequently praised by locals and visitors alike. The donuts exude a fresh, homemade charm that pairs beautifully with the rustic barbecue fare, and many find themselves stopping just as much for these as for the savory dishes.

The atmosphere at Big John’s is intimate and authentic, reflecting its small-town Florida roots. Seating is limited indoors, but ample outdoor tables create a friendly, communal vibe that suits both families and travelers seeking a genuine local flavor. The staff add warmth to the experience with their helpful, welcoming service, making each visit feel personal and unpretentious.

Located on a road frequented by travelers, Big John’s appeals not only to locals craving comfort food but also to those passing through in search of a genuine Southern barbecue stop. It’s this intersection of environment, quality, and community that gives Big John’s its distinct personality. A quick phone call can get you all the information you need, and the menu offers a concise, focused selection, ensuring the kitchen excels at its core offerings rather than overwhelming guests with choices.

Stopped by this place to see what the big deal was about as they were PACKED, found out they are well known for having great donuts. Their BBQ and smashed burgers looked pretty good, however someone should spell check their board lol. In seriousness their donuts are next level, staff is super helpful and they have great BBQ and a super local vibe. Not a lot of indoor seating but they make up for it in outdoor tables.

Found this place only after our highly anticipated return trip to Donutland Express was almost a total loss because we found it closed! We were so bummed but noticed this place across the street also selling donuts. Turns out, it's the same people - they've just upgraded locations! Donuts were still as delicious as our first visit. We didn't try the BBQ but that's our plan if we have to pass this place again on any road trip!!

My husband and son said that was the best burger they ever had. I had the pulled pork and potato salad and it was great. We're traveling from to Orlando so we were happy we found a great spot to stop for a bite.

While on a business trip I was looking for someplace that was local and not a big box and I found Big John’s BBQ. The place is really cool inside. The menu is short but on point. I had the pulled pork combo and it was really delicious. The bun was so soft and buttery. The sauce was sweet Smokey. The baked beans were fantastic! I had never had sweet apple and bacon in my beans before. What an awesome idea. The large Coke Zero was Really Big. The donuts on display are very tempting but I had to say no. They have ice cream and fruit smoothies. All four of my favorite food groups. Lol. I plan on stopping in again and trying the hot dog and smoothie. The gentleman who took my was very friendly and kind. I really enjoyed the whole experience. Thank you guys.

Big John’s Barbecue is a fairly small and very busy spot. The place is full and for good reason. The food is good and the service is friendly and helpful. The smash burgers, hot dogs and pulled pork barbecue sandwich are really tasty and the side are very good as well. We’re glad we stopped.

My Lord! Where do I even begin? Stopped early Sunday morning for a quick snack and was just blown away, by the selection, the size of the servings, the vast variety of donuts and pastries, the ice cream and then I saw that they serve hot breakfast. I ended up getting a little bit of everything, having some now and saving some for the long drive back to Atlanta. I can't say enough about the fine young men John had working that morning. Justice ran the front counter, and he was kind and patient as this old man worked his way through the menu. He answered all my questions, without any hesitation or eye rolling, so common with young people these days! Dominic was in the back tending to the grill and what must be the largest stock pot I had ever seen. He said he was cooking chicken and dumplings for Sunday lunch. He took time away from that to make me one of the best biscuits I've had in my 63 years. Large, hot, wonderful flavor and texture, full of bacon, egg and cheese. I really can't say enough about my visit, and encourage you to stop by and see these folks if you are anywhere nearby. They are just north of I-10 on Hwy 79, off exit 112, on the left hand side. I drive a large tractor trailer for the Publix grocery store, and they had plenty of room, both in front of and behind the store. I really appreciate people who go above and beyond to take care of their customers, and these people do all of that with a servant's heart. Thank you again!

Their fresh made donuts are the best around. The smashburgers are excellent, and rival those other "guys". Definitely top tier burgers. Very friendly service, good atmosphere and location. If you're local or just passing through, you should definitely give it a try. Bet you won't be disappointed!
